Can expired SX-70 film be used years after?

Growing up I had a polaroid camera I loved to death but when the film got discontinued and existing film got more expensive my grandparents decided to throw it away so I would stop asking for film. For my birthday my boyfriend bought me a Polaroid The Button SX-70 camera but I'm having trouble finding film. Of course, all the old film is expired and all else I can find is the experimental PX film which is a bit expensive and experimental. I'll buy the PX film if I have to but I'm wondering I could use the expired film (it's fine if it has any 'artistic' effects) or is there any film on the market that maybe isn't experimental and cheaper. Pretty much, what can I do about film for my Polaroid SX-70 camera?
